The Queensland landscaping industry celebrated the best of the best on November 10th 2018 at a gala dinner held at the Hilton Brisbane. The event, which was hosted by Terry Hansen and featured well-known impersonator Ben Price, was attended by Minister for Housing and Public Works and Minister for Sport the Honourable Mick de Brenni, as well as more than 500 guests from throughout the landscape design and construction industry.
The prestigious Queensland Landscape Construction of the Year award was presented to deserving projects in both the residential and commercial sectors. Competing against entries from throughout the state, Outdoor Secrets won Residential Landscape Construction of the Year for its Paddington project, while the Gold Coast-based Naturelink Landscapes & Design received the award for Commercial Landscape Construction of the Year for Burleigh Boardwalk at Burleigh Heads. Landscape Queensland CEO Mark Sorby said the 2018 awards again showcased the high level of skill and professionalism within the local landscaping industry. He also said that industry trends were changing to meet consumer demands, and that as a result landscapers are undertaking an exciting and diverse range of projects, which were reflected in the latest entries submitted from throughout the state.

Outdoor Secrets for Paddington Project
Precision in this project was intended and delivered. It was a hugely challenging site with five metres of level difference, which has been landscaped to achieve balance between the intimacy of the softscapes and the strong lines of the contemporary elements. A range of technical ability was required to execute the hardscaping, which includes polished concrete, natural-stone tiling, and decking. The lighting pulls the dramatic rectilinear lines into the next level. In striking contrast to this, the lush and full softscapes make this into a personal space that invites you to enjoy the soothing ambiance.

Penfold Projects for Fire Pit Area, Brookfield
This fireplace was superbly built with high-quality products. The stone pavement is expertly installed, with flush mortar that is pleasingly colour matched. The feature seating wall and fire pit wall are well-constructed, being level, evenly spaced and smoothly finished. The fire pit wall perfectly fits the steel insert within, giving the whole feature a high-end appearance, and demonstrating outstanding construction work.

This project showed a level of sophistication and construction excellence not often encountered in residential design projects. The attention to detail for all finishes and integration of elements was exceptionally well-executed. Outstanding engineering and construction in the water feature is evident from the steel pool shell, to the execution of finishes, and the LED lighting with infinite setting options, all remotely controlled via smartphone. The exceptional background of the city skyline complements this bold and highly sophisticated residential landscape feature.

Accented with sandstone walls and features, Cantaur Park is an oasis of green sitting proudly and softly around the homestead. There are many construction difficulties that have been surmounted here. The logistics, the conditions, the water management, the need for best practice soils and sub-soils, and the consideration of these elements for a perfect end result is why this project stands out. The size and scale of this site could easily be diminished by the vastness of its surrounds, but despite that, the landscaper managed to create a lifestyle for the residents. The landscape is a welcome retreat after a long hot day.
