Sloping blocks tend to present unique challenges from the outset, however, transforming these spaces to be not only functional, but also visually enticing, is a challenge in its own. With a specific request from the homeowners to create an area that accommodates both entertainment and exercise purposes, Newport Consulting Engineers, along with Argo Architects + Master Planners for the pool’s design, Broadwater Pools for the pool’s construction, Tonic Projects for the construction of the entertaining areas and timber feature wall and Paul Lynch Landscapes for the surrounding landscaping, the team of professionals worked cohesively to create the wonderful space pictured.
At the initial design stages, it was decided the best way to counteract the sloping block would be to install the pool and entertaining deck at different heights, incorporating cleverly-placed outdoor features to complement.
Constructed at the side of the house, the main concrete pool measures 15m x 3m, creating a sense of openness in the backyard. Fully-tiled with a Jewels 4 Pools interior, the main pool boasts simple clean lines and a modern aesthetic. A 25-metre boundary sits to one side of the pool, most of which features a stunning Bisazza-tiled wall feature for dramatic viewing, as well as a timber-clad portion with LED uplights and lush foliage.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the space is the pool’s clever integration of flowing water between varying ground levels. To provide visual interest, the upper level of the block features two water ponds that flow back into the lower main pool. Laden with Bisazza tiles, these ponds are the perfect way to harmonise both the upper- and lower-tiered sections of the backyard. A Hayward filter and pump, as well as a Hayward Pure Silk chlorinator and Chromatalyzer keeps maintenance to a minimum, while an Evoheat pump and Liquid Blanket pool blanket guarantees comfortable swimming throughout the cooler months. In keeping with the modern design, softened concrete surrounds pool area, and leads all the way up through the stairs and to the gazebo and grassed area.
